Study finds soil bacteria reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Oslo: A Norwegian study finds soil bacteria reduce greenhouse gas emissions in food production. Nitrogen fertilization in agricultural soil is an important source of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. While it was long supposed that reducing these emissions was dreadful, researchers from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) have identified bacteria that can destroy nitrous oxide before it emits into the atmosphere. This method could possibly reduce agricultural releases in Europe by one-third.
